Question Nine Issues Everyone Knows About Brain Health That You don't

Normally, TREM2 tells the microglia cells to clear beta-amyloid plaques from the brain and helps fight inflammation in the brain. These microglia and astrocytes collect around the neurons but fail to perform their debris-clearing function. Alzheimer’s disease disrupts this communication among neurons, resulting in loss of function and cell death. The axon is a cable-like structure at the end of the cell body opposite the dendrites and transmits messages to other neurons. For example, they may strengthen or weaken synaptic connections, or even break down connections with one group of neurons and build new connections with a different group. The brain is a glutton for oxygen, so it's possible that even a slight lack of circulation can affect its performance. If a clot breaks loose, it can block a brain artery, causing a stroke. Fainting. If the heart beats rapidly, blood pressure can drop, causing the person to faint. The brain has one of the richest blood supplies of any organ and consumes up to 20 percent of the energy used by the human body-more than any other organ. The Surgeon General’s Advisory is a part of the Department of Health and Human Services’ (HHS) ongoing efforts to support President Joe Biden’s whole-of-government strategy to transform mental health care for all Americans.
